Chatterley Whitfield

Chatterley Whitfield
The carcase of Chatterley Whitfield Colliery continues to rot away. Shame on you Stoke Council.

Rhisiart Hincks, rastar, Bart Van Damme, David Torke and 4 other people have particularly liked this photo

Lost-Albion and I, were visiting my son in Stoke, and had gone out for the day. We saw this from the top deck of the bus, and leapt off, to have a prowl around. That trip is one of the many still on slides awaiting Kev to get round to scan.

Do you think it'll still be standing in ten years time? It would've been good going down the shaft into the working sections when it first opened as a museum.

It was an excellent place to visit in those days, and the underground trip was fairly well laid out. The deterioration of the buildings is such that I do wonder how much longer they will be left standing. This is a scheduled monument, but the caring Council doesn't seem to want to know. They will no doubt one day say that it is unsafe and must be demolished immediately.

A wonderful picture, top drawer stuff, this; combining UK heritage and UK weather perfectly!

It is an amazing building but, it seems, with little restoration or commercial reuse value: perhaps too much a single-purpose kind of structure? Perhaps as a museum, though? Look at Armley Mill in Leeds and see what they did there; although that was a mill proper and bigger than this site.
