shot for 'the sunday challenge' group assignement (curves). 30 cannon street is one of my favourite central london buildings. it is neither that tall or particularly big, but the space it occupies near st pauls cathedral (dome, bottom right) is an historically important one architecturally. its space was originally occupied by a wren designed church that was destroyed in bombing during world war two.

commissioned by credit lyonnais and designed by whinney, son & austen hall, the controversial and ground breaking building was finished in 1977. it has many critics, but for me the curves and almost ship like splaying as it rises into the sky are unique. it was the first building in the world to be clad in glass reinforced concrete. as a designer myself, i can appreciate the efforts to create something of contemporary beauty in an historic setting and on an odd shaped site. i really do love it and for the 70's this was way ahead of its time.

Steve Harland, James Wiley, manu', Rhisiart Hincks and 5 other people have particularly liked this photo

Oh it does look like the bow of an ocean cruise liner ...striking architecture Jon, although I can see where it might jar the senses when in contrast to the historical sites in the area. Great Curves for the challenge. :)

Very strong architectural capture, perfect b&w. Love that you included the curves of St Paul's dome alongside the strong modern architecture!

strong and graphic, like the crop with St Paul's dome in the corner.

I must have walked past this before and not 'seen' it, eyes open next time I'm down that way.

That's certainly a curvy building. Doesn't look at all like a 70's creation. Nice b&w shot.

Looks like what they had to do with the plot of land where the Flatiron Building stands in New York City.
