"Northern Rail" train.

"Northern Rail" train.
A Blackpool - Colne "Northern Rail" train leaving Brierfield station. This line used to continue to Skipton where passengers could get connections to almost anywhere in the country via Leeds or Preston. Today the line terminates at Colne, just a few miles short of Skipton. Campaigners have been trying to get the line re-opened for many years, so far without luck.

Don't get me started on these Northern Rail trains..I had never experienced them before until visiting my daughter in Newbury from Parbold near Liverpool the other week and from Northwich this week...They are dreadful..so rickety and jerky, every time they go round a bend I think we are going to be derailed!..and crowded beyond belief!..When going from Manchester to Parbold there were 2 carriages for about 3 and a half carriages worth of people including a huge traditional Jewish family who all lay down on the floor in the doorways..the Father nearly having a punch up with another man and refusing to get out of the doorway so the train could move in protest at it being so crowded...!!
Anyway I am sure any train would be welcome for the campaigners you mention..
Sorry about the rant!..Lovely shot which I shall fav so I can look at it again and remember!...

An excellent description Gillie....and it's even worse during the football season and on bank-holidays !! One advantage of living here is that we're only two stops away from the end of the line (Colne), so when we get a westbound train there is usually plenty of room until we get to Burnley Central (the next stop) which is where it starts to get crowded. Coming back, however, from Preston or Blackpool often means having to stand most of the way, assuming the train even turns up at all and / or doesn't break down which is a common thing on this line :-(

You're right Cathy....although I would describe it as more like Monty Python :-)

These rough-riding sardine cans should all be transferred to Greater London.
And we all can guess what the reaction would be down there!

Used to see these on the Cumbrian Coast on Barrow - Carlisle services, an ordeal of about 2 and a half hours. Not many survivors at journeys end!!
