High Street, Stroud, Gloucestershire

High Street, Stroud, Gloucestershire
These 18thC - possibly earlier - dwellings are in the High Street, near Top of Town. The steeply pitched gable fronts are typical of the "Cotswold" vernacular style, although they have had their original stone tile roofs replaced with modern slates, and only the small gable windows are original. The Dickensian "bow window" shop front is a 20th century pastiche, but quite nicely done.

Although much changed by the industrial revolution, Stroud is very old, - it had it's commercial origins in the wooltrade in early medieval times. The area has always been famous for woollen broadcloth, and so great was the commerce with the Catholic church in Italy in the 15th century, that a Papal nuncio was stationed in Stroud, to ensure the quality of the shipments.

1960 Kodak 66, f4.5/75mm Anaston lens, X2 Yellow filter. Fomapan 200 in Caffenol C: Instant Coffee: 20g, Crystalline Washing Soda: 30g, Ascorbic Acid Powder: 6g, Water: 500ml. 12Minutes @21C.

Robert, merci beaucoup encore!
More building than architecture perhaps! My father was apprenticed as a plumber and glazier near Stroud, and worked on many houses, shops, farms etc in the area during the1920's and 30's, and he had an encyclopaedic knowledge of building techniques, some of which I have managed to learn!

A fine record of historical value ! I see at the far right of the image part of a brick and glass building with a sign "connexions" on it . Maybe a more modern addition connecting the old ?

Tom, thanks for you kind words!
I seem to remember that "Connexions" is/was an estate agents, but not sure. This thoroughfare is now pedstrianised, and there have been some changes to road junctions, and I think the newer buildings are a result those changes.

Connexions is a youth employment agency, working for the government. However that is a diversion from complimenting you on a lovely record of an historic townscape.

Phil, thanks for your kind words, and for correcting that! I wasn't sure, and it's been a while since I visited Stroud
