Pont Saint-Étienne, Limoges

Pont Saint-Étienne, Limoges
Originally a defensive structure, this ancient bridge across the Vienne river in Limoges has been in continuous use since 1203, and remains largely as it was built, except for the two guard towers on either bank, which were demolished in the early 1600's and replaced with new abutments on each side.

Some restoration work was carried out in the mid 19th C, but in 1903 the city administration proposed it's demolition and replacement, but fortunately a public outcry by the townspeople stopped this outrage, and it is now one of the best preserved early medieval bridges in France. It is only for pedestrian use, and for centuries has formed part of one of the many pilgrim routes to Santiago de Compostela.

Nikon L35AF, f2.8/35mm Nikon lens, X2 yellow filter. Polypan F in stock Gainer's Ascobic Acid developer, 8mins@21C. Scanned @2400dpi on Epson V500 and photo-finished in Gimp.

Robert, many thanks! There's another one a bit further downstream, with more bizarre history, but it must wait 'til my next visit!
