À la Recherche du Temps Perdu

À la Recherche du Temps Perdu
This image might be from almost any time in the latter half of the 20th century, but it was actually taken only a few years ago, in 2010. Three visitors rest outside the roundhouse at Montluçon during a railway weekend called Festirail, held each year in Montluçon, which is one of the very few loco depots in central France that can still service steam locos.

The loco on the left, 141 TD 740 was built by the SFCM de Denain in 1932, for the Compagnie des Chemins de Fer de l'Est. In the middle is 141 R 420 built in May 1946 by the American Locomotive Company, Schenectady, New York, and on the right, 141 R 840, built at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in November 1946.

Over a thousand of these 2-8-0 locos were built in North America, to restart the almost totally destroyed stock of French locomotives after 1945, and although Alco & Baldwin were the largest builders, they were also built by the Lima Locomotive Works, Ohio, the Montreal Locomotive Works, Quebec, and the Canadian Locomotive Company, Kingston, Ontario. I think only six serviceable examples remain, four in France and two in Switzerland.

1952 Welmy Six, f4.5/75mm Terionar lens, X2 yellow filter. Fomapan Ultra 200 in Caffenol C, Instant Coffee Granules 20g, Crystalline Washing Soda 15g, Ascorbic Acid Powder 6g, water to 500ml. 10 mins @21C.

Most beautiful Mike,
(it looks like a longer focal length than those 75mm -- a crop , or maybe the bending foreground acts like a "Trompe-l'œil" ? )
Never seen a Welmy - Ebay ? , british import ?

Many thanks, Rob!
Well spotted! - there was a diesel railcar to the right of the picture, and although beautifully restored, I wanted to keep this "all steam", so I cropped it out!

The Welmy Six was a (good) Japanese copy of a Zeiss Ikon folder, excellent coated triplet, and a shutter with watch-like precision- wish I'd never sold it !!

Tom, many thanks for your encouragement!
From memory, they were all in steam, and the two Mikados later ran an excursion train up into the Massif Central, - very impressive!
