I have, perhaps, seemed unduly critical of the little Ixus 960is, in the captions to the last couple of photos, and in the ensuing correspondence with Rob Keppens (Robbek), but in fact, I am amazed by what it can do!

Certainly, for a lot of the subjects which I enjoy photographing, the very short focal lengths are not without problems, but for at least one of my other passions, - our garden and it's plants, it is just staggeringly good. This pic of the flowers of Rhododendron ponticum is a good example, bags of colour and contrast and very sharp definition from a hand held shot, so the image stabilisation seems to work well in the 70+ year old hands! (Look at the original)

I would have been happy with this shot if it had been taken with a medium format SLR, but when you consider that this image was made with something slightly smaller than a packet of Lucky Strikes, it makes one realise how rapidly camera technology is advancing, and I love it!

People have always been resistant to change, it's a perfectly reasonable part of human nature, and in some ways I'm no exception, but thankfully scientists and engineers are driven innovators, so photographers are the beneficiaries of this, as in so many other ways. You can almost hear past generations muttering "Well, motor cars are OK, but you will never replace the horse" !!!

Robert, merci beaucoup! Yes, me too, I don't think I will ever give up film, but I am beginning to see the possibilities that are now coming from digital!
