I think they originate in Central America.
It's quite interesting to see such a dark fruit that's ripe and not rotten.

What an incredible fruit - the flesh looks so gooey. Is it plumlike in flavour? Do you spread it on bread?

Have you ever tried a persimmon? It's like that, only a bit gooier. (Is that a word?) No, you bury your face in and slurp, and end up in a bit of a mess. It could be good on bread, I suppose, but I don't like to dilute the flavour. The knife was there just to open it carefully so I could take its portrait. No, not plum-like.
