I would assume that the spores are on the gills, on the older specimens, but I've never picked one to check.

Oh, I see. So this is gills and the spikes are ornament on the cap surface?

My book describes them as "distinctive fibrillose scales that fall off as the cap expands. . . .. . spore print white."
