July Grey

July Grey
The 'marine layer' coming off the Pacific Ocean is our natural air-conditioner (free of charge) when the summer heat kicks in. Tourists shake their heads in disbelief at July temperatures topping out at 57°F/14°C which, by the way, is typical for San Francisco in the summer. Even more surprising is that 15 miles/24 kilometers inland it is a cloudless and sunny 90°F/32°C.

This image was taken with a Pentax 6 X 7 medium format film camera with a Super-Multi-Coated-Takumar/6X7 1:3.5/55mm lens using Kodak Portra 160 film, scanned by an Epson Perfection V600 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.

Very nice...the sky truly shows the odd temperature distibution described by your intro.

The San Francisco Bay Area is a place where you can choose your preferred summer climate, ranging from cool and foggy to hot, sunny and dry (and everything in-between) in a matter of very short distances, sometimes just being on the west or east side of a hill (15°F difference).

Surely you know Ansel Adam's great work, right?

Wouldn't you have loved to be 'a fly on the darkroom wall' studying this great photographer's technique and process??!!

And of course the main enjoyment of this image is the super sharpness of the Pentax 6X7 lens !!

I confess that I return to the Pentax Takumar-Multi-Coated-Super-Duper lenses more and more often for their undeniably great clarity, regardless of the earth-shaking kathunk of the shutter release in the camera body . . .
