Yes I'm certain that it was used for that purpose. In their heyday the canals were like todays motorways and carried lots of goods and raw materials. It was a mine owner who paid for the construction of this canal. It was opened 17th July 1761 and on the heritage webpage they call it Englands first canal: www.bridgewatercanal.co.uk/history/default.aspx
