Sutter's Fort Oak

Sutter's Fort Oak
Continuing the theme of oaks! This beautiful oak is at Sutter's Fort in Sacramento, California. It was brought all the way from John Sutter's birthplace in Kandern, Baden, Germany. The Native Sons and Native Daughters of the Golden West planted it here on July 19th, 1939.

Taken with my Goat Rock Cam. It's on a 5x7 paper negative, and the fov is about 90 degrees so you're looking almost straight up near the top of this picture.

very cool Ned. I was introduced to Dan Fogelburg via a song Sutters Creek........maybe the same family/place. Neat image.

Yes, it's the same Sutter. Sutter's Creek is up in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and is where gold was discovered, sparking the gold rush in 1849. This picture was made at his fort which is in what is now Sacramento, California. His fort was a major stopping place for pioneers moving out to California in the 1850's and 1860's. After California became a state, the first owner of the property where I live arrived in 1851 with his wife. They almost certainly would have stopped at Sutter's fort on the way here, before catching a boat down the Sacramento River.
