The Black Tern challenge

The Black Tern challenge
I don't usually even try to take photos of birds in flight - not the easiest thing to do with a point-and-shoot camera, I find. While I was watching something else, I tried a couple of shots of these fast-flying Black Terns, and one or two seemed not too bad. Seemed a shame to delete them, so will hang on to them. Taken at a pond SW of Calgary on 14 July 2013.

Oh, is that what those are? I have tried and tried to photograph these birds that are always hovering over the lake and dipping and dropping repeatedly. I have a lot of distant shots that don't crop well (my camera doesn't seem to like focusing on them, and is often distracted by the waves in the water) I find them fascinating, and this photo of one is amazingly close and clear! As soon as I saw the thumbnail I recognized the wing shape and the posture and I was glad to get a closer look via your photo!

Perfect lighting to capture the wing details Anne ... an excellent in-flight shot ... and I really like the concentrated light focused on the wings ... leaving the other areas darker ... a superb piece of work!!
