Buttermarket

Buttermarket
This square just outside the cathedral gate is more than 800 years old. The name Buttermarket was first used about 200 years ago, previously the name was `Bullstake'. Bulls were tied and baited with dogs, both for fun and also because it was believed that it made the flesh more tender.

Canterbury’s witch trials started in the Butter Market outside the Cathedral gate and were generally organised by a local person who felt he had been persecuted by the witch – many were nagging housewives, some simply did not agree with something said by another – and so it was a way of getting rid of those people you did not like.

In the middle of the square is the war memorial. Behind that is the Old Buttermarket pub. There has been a public house on that site for over 500 years; a coaching inn called the Black Boy stood here from the 1600s until 1908. A butter market used to be held in the square outside the Inn.

The market is situated on top of Roman ruins and a series of secret tunnels once connected the Inn to the cathedral. One can only imagine why the monks would need a secret tunnel to an Inn ...... 

Lovely shot Doug, it has a terrific atmosphere and winter chill, but the shops look warm and inviting, Great information.

Luckily we don't get rid of unfriendly old people by calling them witches, any more.

I don't think they were all old Don. All the same, I'm not sure letting nagging wives escape the traditional punishment of the time was a good idea [luckily my wife doesn't look at ipernity] :-)
