Christ Church Gateway

Christ Church Gateway
This is Christ Church Gateway, main visitor entrance to Canterbury Cathedral. It was originally built to celebrate the marriage of Arthur, Prince of Wales, to Catherine of Aragon in 1502. But Arthur died a few months later so I guess nobody was in a rush to finish it so the gate took another twenty years to complete.
The large figure of Christ is a replacement of the original that was damaged by Parliamentary troops during the Civil War. Apparently they used it as target practice before attaching ropes and and pulling it down. They probably set a precedent, I’ve seen that done a couple of times since [but not Jesus].

Cracking image mate.............the stonework and carving on that gate is just outstanding and must have taken years to do. It still looks in pretty good nick as well.
