The House on the Hill

The House on the Hill
The memory crept into him like a bad taste from the back of his mouth. He shook his head and turned his gaze to the faint pattern on the floor from the moonlight seeping through the window shade.

He sat up on the edge of the bed, his head stuffy with dry air. The floor was warm to his feet in spite of the dark cellar beneath. For a moment he longed to just lie back down and close his eyes. But the memory threatened dreams if he did.

“Time to get up,” he told himself, knowing that it wasn’t. He had nothing to do, nowhere to go. It didn’t really matter whether he got up or not.

“What did you say?” A whispering voice in the darkness asked.

“It’s nothing. Go back to sleep.”
