The Calm before the Storm

The Calm before the Storm
This morning in Birmingham City Centre, these three friendly Police officers kindly let me take a photo of them. They were awaiting the start of what turned out to be a vicious encounter.
More than 1,000 officers were, and probably still are, on duty in Birmingham to police a demonstration organised by the English Defence League (EDL).
The rally coincided with a counter-demonstration by members of anti-fascist groups. It was one of the biggest operations the force had ever put in place.
Most of these so-called 'rallies' are organised by mobile phone - here, they stand in the heat before an advertisement for the new iPhone. This photograph speaks for itself in so many ways. Four people were arrested after throwing bottles at the police - and so far, I've heard at least one policeman is in hospital with concussion.
This isn't the best of portrait photography, but it's the best I could ask for in the circumstances!
I left Birmingham shortly after this was taken - whoever these brave officers are, please accept my thanks for allowing me to take your photograph - and I hope so much you are all fit and healthy and at home again, recovering. Thanks for being much, much braver than me and doing the job you do.

Léopold, Peter, Blueman, Andy Grant and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

The back story is most interesting...I think our police have a thankless job...and especially in circumstances like these....
Thanks for sharing, Jan

Excellent work, Jan. It's easy to forget what these guys have to go through. Thank goodness someone is willing to do the jobs. It would be a far worse place without them.
Have a great week ahead.

I'm not a fan of city centres at the best of times, & certainly not when the EDL were going to show. Think I would have steered extra well clear! You & others have already commented on the policeman's "lot" in such circumstances, Great reportage, Jan.

Great documentary shot, Jan, and what a shame that they had to face such a mess. We had it in Seattle too not that long ago.

Your words are all so true, Jan. And this is a great, candid shot of these cheerful Police Officers in good old 'Brum.
