Portrait of an Austro-Hungarian Feldwebel: recto

albumen print on cardboard, carte de visite Josef Picek, Jičín, late 1870s - early 1880s entry number: cdv.2010.01 Portrait of an Austro-Hungarian Feldwebel (infantry sergeant) proudly posing, with his sword and kepi, in a lavishly furnished neo-baroque studio. Probably from the late 1870s or early 1880s (t.p.q. the 1876 prize on the back of the card). My thanks go to Josef Novak for the translation of the Czech inscription on the verso and to wraith 42 for identifying the soldier`s rank. *** View this…

Portrait of Szolga Vilma

albumen print on cardboard, carte de visite Ciehulski Péter, Marosvásárhely (Târgu Mureș / Neumarkt am Mieresch), ca. 1875-1885 entry number: cdv.2010.05 The portrait of a woman identified as Szolga Vilma on the verso of the photograph. Her figure emanates correctness and stability - a pose enforced by the presence of the book she is holding in a gesture that hesitates between simulating a momentary interruption from reading and openly presenting it to the viewer. She might be a teacher or just a good Chri…

Portrait of a Marosvásárhely lady

albumen print on cardboard, carte de visite Ciehulski és Wargha, Maros Vásárhely (Târgu-Mureș / Neumarkt am Mieresch), ca. 1874-1880 entry number: cdv.2010.04 Portrait of an unidentified young lady from Marosvásárhely. This local beauty`s attire slightly bypasses the bourgeois sobriety of the 1870s, so I`m imagining she isn`t a wealthy Marosvásárhely merchant`s daughter. Might she be an elegant noblewoman, or perhaps an actress or singer? *** View this photo on Flickr.

Portrait of Endes Kálmán, by Tauffer Gyula (Kolozsvár)

Albumen print on cardboard, carte de visite Tauffer Gyula, Kolozsvár (Cluj / Klausenburg), ca. 1870-5 entry number: cdv.2012.02 Purchased from a Serbian dealer. Tauffer seems to have been using a very similar cardboard design from the late 1860s down to 1875, but this stock uses a slightly tighter font on the verso than the one on very 1860-ish photos in the collections of the Flickr users ggaabboo, Andrei George and Molnár Atilla (see link below). However, the card design, the carpet and the neorococo des…
