Bucuresti: str. Mercur | Bucharest: Mercur street
gelatin silver print, 110 x 80 mm
unidentified Romanian photographer (possibly amateur), ca. 1910-20
entry number: afh.2015.37

A rarely captured corner of Bucharest: Mercur street, seen from the intersection with N. Golescu street. Notable figures of Romania’s social and cultural élite lived on this street, but a handwritten note on the back identifies it only as “The place where I used to wait for you in the winter”. The residences of Titu Maiorescu, Al. Sebast. Zisu and col. N. Bădulescu (owners according to the 1911 cadastral survey) are visible in the photo. Opposite to the latter house, outside the frame, one could find the private museum of Anastase Simu. All of these were demolished in the 1960s, to make place for a disagreeable block of flats. The only element in the photo which survives to this day is… the shadow of Ioan M. Mitilineu’s house, which escaped demolition and houses today a café.

fotograf român neidentificat (posibil amator), cca. 1910-20
nr. de identificare: afh.2015.37

Un unghi rar fotografiat: începutul str. Mercur (azi Arthur Verona), colț cu str. N. Golescu, cca. 1910-20 (datare de rafinat).
Se disting casele Titu Maiorescu, unde aveau loc ședințele Junimii (în prim plan), Al. Sebast.
