Tintype of an odd-looking American couple, late 1860s - early 1870s

Tintype of an odd-looking American couple, late 1860s - early 1870s
American tintype (presumably 6th plate), cropped and glued on a CDV-size paper mat
photographer unknown (possibly Ohio), late 1860s (post 1868) - early 1870s
entry number: fer.2010.01.

On the paper mat, "Patented Mar. 7. 65. Sept. 22. 68."

The restrained posing style of this couple leaves the nature of their relationship rather ambiguous: close relatives, brother and sister, husband and wife?. The woman`s dress exhibits the military patterns fashionable during and immediately after the Civil War. The scarcity of the scenery suggests a travelling photographer (as was often the case with tintypes). Purchased from a dealer in Ohio and purportedly coming from an Ohio estate.
