Daguerreotype of a bookish lady

Daguerreotype of a bookish lady
6th plate daguerreotype
photographer unknown, American
ca. 1850

A calm mid-aged lady regards us serenely, as though distracted for a second from her reading. Her austere apperance is intelligently built by the highlighted folds of her shawl. I`m not sure if the books here are just common studio props or something more - her gesture shows perhaps a familiarity with books not seen in other cases - but I like to picture her as a restrained and attentive schoolteacher.

With proper lightning, the depth of this daguerreotype amazes almost every viewer.
