Daguerreotype of a severe gentleman by Anthony, Clark & Co.

Daguerreotype of a severe gentleman by Anthony, Clark & Co.
6th plate American daguereotype
Anthony, Clark & Co., New York, ca. 1846-7.
Housed in a Pretlove half case.

The severe and energetic features of this aged gentleman are intensified by the stark chiaroscuro which almost projects his gaze beyond the two-dimensional surface of the daguerreotype. Another face with no preserved name or history - but his overall aspect, his clenched fist and his closely held book make me think of a radical of some kind, a preacher or - why not? - an abolitionist.

This daguerreotype preserves its original seals, with the inscription ”Manufactured expressly for Anthony, Clark & Co. and warranted perfect”. As such, it comes from one of the most significant daguerreian establishments in New York, the National Miniature Gallery (at 247 Broadway). Edward Anthony was its founder and central figure from 1843 to 1847. James R. Clark collaborated with Anthony from 1844, and became partner in 1846. The company was listed as ”Anthony, Clark & Co.” in 1846-1847; Clark took full charge of the National Miniature Gallery in 1847, but died next year.
