Daguerreotype of a young woman, ca. 1850-1855

Daguerreotype of a young woman, ca. 1850-1855
1/9 plate daguerreotype
unidentified photographer, probably American, ca. 1850-5
entry number: dag.2010.01.

Daguerreotype of an unidentified young woman holding a book, possibly a Bible. Her overall modest appearance would match well the portrait of a religious lady.

The hallmark with a bust (possibly of Daguerre) may indicate a French origin for the plate, but the matting system is typically Anglo-American.

Age and neglect have left their mark on this small photograph, but the extensive damage on the plate somehow conveys an impression of emergence from the opacity of oblivion. My very first dag, bought in Paris.
