Long Tailed Blue

Long Tailed Blue
At Last! After three weekends searching fruitlessly in Sussex for a newly emerged Long Tailed Blue, Leigh Prevost and I headed to Kingsdown in Kent today where Leigh spotted this lovely male.

A small wave of these rare migrants arrived in August around the south east coast and their progeny have been emerging over the last couple of weeks, the first UK born examples since 1990 I believe. Sadly they cannot survive northern winters and rely on a fast life cycle and migration to spread annually from their mediterranean base. Although common in warmer climes, they rarely reach the UK but this has been a good year for migrant butterflies (that has also included good numbers of clouded yellows and a few european swallowtails).
