ACK! Where Have I Been?!
My apologies for the absence and my lack of visits. I'm guilty of diving into an online game that I love, and it's swept me away with its extreme engagement. The game of RIFT allows me to do things I cannot do in real life and every once in a while I just gotta go be a magical being. I'm not "full" yet so I won't be around here very much until I'm satisfied. I'm going to do my best to post and visit but please forgive my lag in participation!

Today's Pictures
Today I'm posting the last set from our incredible hike at Eastern Sooke Regional Park. Places like this are why we love to travel. Our eyes were opened to the extreme beauty of Vancouver Island's southern coastline and we learned the difference between normal hiking trails in Canada vs. the US. Although this particular trail turned out to be the most extreme of the entire trip on the island, it made us aware that trails tend to be a bit tougher and wild, with assumptions that the hiker is naturally careful and fit enough to take on challenges along the way. Game on! We loved it so much!

My main picture shows another lovely coastal view, accented by Secretary Island in the distance. If you look on the beach in the lower left you'll see the enormous driftwood tree stump that I shared in my last set (I'll add the picture again as an inset).

Insets of our hike include: a neat panorama of the beach at the beginning of the hike which will give you a sense of the beauty of the area, a group of mushrooms I found, some atmospheric forest images, dried peapods with peas inside, and an oil tanker in the misty distance.

I'm also posting pictures of an old bus that was parked at the RV campground we were staying at. It was so old and decrepit that I couldn't resist immortalizing it! Of course I needed to find out more. First off, there are many people who have taken old busses and turned them into travel coaches. The front of this bus has a backwards sign reading "Re-Tyred" and I expect that it has seen a lot of country in its day. Digging further, I learned that this was one of the busses used in Canada's Greyhound fleet, made by Motor Coach Industries in 1950. I am so happy I took pictures because they turned out really well! :)

Finally, I'm including a picture of our Grey Wolf trailer and our truck, parked at our Malamat Mountain RV campsite. This location turned out to be perfect for us. Only about 30 minutes from Victoria, just minutes from Goldstream Provincial Park and about 45 minutes-hour from East Sooke Regional Park, it was a very nice hub to base our southern Vancouver Island adventures. The RV "resort" was a bit run-down but nice enough. Many people actually lived there full-time, something we noticed a lot of on our travels. There was a very homey quality to the place and our experience there was very nice.

Pam, what's the weather like for you right now? It's been raining cats and dogs on and off for the past few days. I'm glad because it's been an extremely dry fall and early winter and we really need to get the water table rebuilt. Is it dry where you live too? I sure do hope that you are feeling well and shoring up your energies for your upcoming procedure. I'm very happy to read that things are moving along…now you just need to set the appointment! *GREAT BIG HUGS from southern Oregon*

Your panorama pictures are simply stunning. It looks a fantastic place to visit and to take hundreds of photos!!!!! If those parks enable you to live there permanently, then it would be superb having that beauty around you all the time.

I love the old coach - I can see that would make a great RV for someone. Great reading your stories again, and don't worry about not visiting daily - I don't always have the time to fit it in.

You have me "stumped". I can't choose a favorite. Love the views of the little bay, the mushrooms are superb and the stump is magnificent as are the seed pods. The old bus is neat, too. Ah well, doesn't really matter that I can't choose a favorite since you've already chosen them as your favorites.

It's been a busy week. Had a long meeting on Monday. I think we're getting somewhere with understanding and applying state regulations and with new paperwork. We are struggling (1) with trying to understand the regulations and what the state means by them - we think we've got it and then the inspectors come and tell us and Lakeland that we don't; (2) staff who can't seem to get things straight - using the wrong forms, filling them out improperly (can't they read?) and just not listening to what we say and (3) trying to balance patients rights with medical needs and safety concerns.

Monday evening we had our Christmas shopping expedition and had a great time. We provided pizza and drinks and donuts (very healthy, aye?) and then wandered around the mall for several hours. The mall was all but deserted and the shops were selling things at huge discounts. Sears is going out of business and it makes me wonder it the day of shopping malls is past. We go just once a year.

Neal wasn't able to go because he had a bad day and wouldn't go to work. Breaks my heart when something like that happens, but we have to toe the line with him or he just takes advantage of us. He was here today and we promised him we would go to their winter festival tomorrow. He's already forgotten about Monday, I guess, and did well today.

Tuesday we made apple butter. We had a bunch of apples from the neighbor and used them that way. Made most of it for the daughter here and the daughter in Edmonton, but saved some for ourselves. That's an all-day affair since it has to boil down for several hours and then all be canned. Love the stuff, though, when it's finished and so does Neal.

Caught up on bills, letters and did some cooking yesterday, a Thai curry. Nancy did some baking and by the time that was finished we were exhausted. Going to make a Pavlova tonight and hoping to do a roast and Yorkshire puddings tomorrow. Had a nice steak with a baked potato and roasted cauliflower a night this week as well. We obviously are retired since that really isn't much, but it is enough to wear us out.

Dad and Mom are struggling on. They are in a really good place, expensive (as they all are) but the best run and cleanest place I've ever seen. I've been in some that aren't and one of our daughters worked in one that was so poorly run and disgustingly careless that she finally quit. I've been in some that stank so badly you couldn't stand it. We joke that Edward is going to take me out in the woods and shoot me when I get to the point that I need that kind of care.

Not much else so will go. All the best to both of you, the Photographer and the Genius.

Forgot about books. Just finished rereading a great sci-fi novel, Earth Abides. I'd rank that up with other favorites, Way Station (and others by Simak), Fahrenheit 451 (and others by Bradbury), Farnham's Freehold, Asimov's Foundation series, Dune, etc. And you must read Mistress Masham's Repose, a book written for kids but in my opinion one that only an adult can fully enjoy.

Thanks for the nice comments on the bird photos. I've always loved watching the birds at the feeders - my dad always had feeders out - but photographing them is another challenge and joy. Nancy's dad had feeders, too, outside the window of his room in the nursing home and really enjoyed watching them. He'd had a stroke and they, old TV shows and visitors were his joys in life. He was a great dad and a though he'd had little education was very skilled with his hands - a furniture and clock maker most of his life. We miss him and her mom, too.

Rainy, cold and gray today. Neal was here in the morning but the rest of the day just kind of drifted by. Have to go to the winter festival at Neal's place tomorrow and then Nancy has to go to a ladies' luncheon, so tomorrow is pretty much used up. I get lonely and bored when she's away so will probably do some cooking - the cooking I didn't get done today. In any case, have a wonderful day and enjoy your game.

Just a quick visit this evening..............as I have Christmas-related "stuff" to be getting on with!

I really like all these images Janet...............my fave is your main image this time, I love the way you've framed the island between the two sides of the little inlet. The light is gorgeous and has brought out some wonderful details.

In the PiPs I especially like the bus! Despite how obviously dilapidated it is I just love how it looks. You've captured it in perfect detail and colour.

The macro images (mushrooms and seeds in pods) are just awesome! I also love the image of your RV and truck.

Thanks for sharing as always................now get back to your game..!!

A wonderful hike, no doubt and punctuated by fine photographs of your experiences here Janet. I particularly like the first panoramic Pip and the fourth seascape too but they are all good. The Canadian coast around here is pretty impressive to say the least. Got to admire too, the Samsung Galaxy phone that you took this one with, mainly because I cannot differentiate this from my own Nikon DSLR shots on here. It says something for sure. - As always with you, accompanied by a great story-line description too. Well done.

Cheers from a cold, dank, NW England. Herb

on one side the forest and quite near it that arid and tough soil...
