Saturday Self-Challenge: Things That Fly or Float

Saturday Self-Challenge: Things That Fly or Float

(+2 insets!) (please view large for even more detail!)

We had originally planned to visit two other places on our Central Oregon Trip, including a two-day side trip out to the coast at Tillamook and a four-night stay at Detroit Lake State Park. Because of our transmission snafu, we ended up turning our four nights at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park to 11 nights and cancelling our other destinations. However, we did end up adding a different destination for our last five nights: Diamond Lake!

We'd discovered this place on the way home from my birthday trip last year. We'd headed up to Sun River for a few glorious days of hiking and biking at the end of September and on the way back to Medford we had enough time to stop off at a spot along the way that we'd only driven past before. There was a 10-mile paved path around this beautiful lake which seemed like the perfect distance for a brief stop. That trail turned out to be one of the most delightful we'd ever had the pleasure of riding on and we wanted to return and repeat the experience.

I'm happy to report that going around Diamond Lake again was equally fantastic on our second time around! During our stay we also went on another bike ride and a long hike, along with two days of fishing! The RV campground we stayed at was super too, with a wonderful forest setting and lots of birds and other animals to enjoy.

I went out with my macro lens one morning and got hundreds of neat images as I strolled along. Part of my wandering took me down to a small, lazy creek clogged with logs which emptied into Diamond Lake. There I found all kind of cool subjects by the water, including damselflies! My main picture today shows my lucky close-up portrait! I have an inset which shows the whole damselfly. Unfortunately the light was low enough that I couldn't get a proper full-dof image but I'm still very happy that I got such a nice, crisp image of its face. This guy was so brave…I just kept creeping closer and closer until I stopped because I didn't want to scare it away. I managed to get a dozen pictures that were crisp, hooray! :) And what luck…today's Saturday Self-Challenge is all about things that fly or float! :D

(I'm also sharing an inset that shows the creek so you can see how filled with logs it was! The creek really seemed more like a pond but there was a culvert which led under the main road there and emptied into Diamond Lake)

Pam, it's wonderful to be in communication with you again--I've really missed our little back and forth conversations! Best of all, I'm so happy that you are so understanding that I won't be able to post pictures every day when I'm away. It would have been nice but you know how it is! :D *SENDING BIG HUGS YOUR WAY!*

What a precise closeup - all that detail in the face area. Marvellous job, Janet! I'm not much on insects, per se, but I could look at macros like this all day.

Beautiful, clear images, Janet. I love these guys. We have them at our pond and they're so fun to watch especially during termite season. :)

Fabulous close-up work, Janet. The detail and color are incredible and the two photos are superb even if you didn't get the DOF you wanted. The other photo of the creek is wonderful, too. Damselflies, Dragonflies and Butterflies are the bane of my existence. Every so often they cooperate, but often they drive me crazy by flying away just as I am getting ready to push the shutte t

Didn't get much sleep last night so I'm a bit woozy and will probably go to bed early tonight. Just had an espresso tonic with a blackberry/rosemary/gin syrup and some lemon balm that was awesome. We were in a coffee shop in Bellingham and they were serving them, with just mint. We decided on something a bit different. Don't know if tonic water is on your list of drinkables but you ought to try one if it is.

When we go to our son and daughter-in-law, we always get to try new things. They are both great cooks and are always trying something new. Had taro for the first time and loved it and he made chocolate souffles as well. She's the kind the never uses a recipe, throws things together in what seems a random fashion and it is always wonderful. He's a bit more traditional but always trying something new.

We had the gang over to see their aunt/sister/sister-in-law and got the boat out too. Had a very pleasant evening and will be getting together tomorrow also. Makes me thankful that our family is so close with the exception of one younger brother who lives on the east coast and who we only hear from on rare occasions. With at exception we all keep in touch and so do our kids and get together whenever we can.

That page of Lupine photos was incredible, but I always prefer the less showy wildflowers (many of those were cultivated varieties). I've seen those in the photos, though, (naturalized) lining the highways in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and they were amazing. The Lupines we see (and you too) are usually smaller plants and usually are blue to purple with some white and yellow species. They always put on a good show, though.

Can hardly see straight. Will try to finish this tomorrow morning. Back again next morning and feeling more rested. Have to make some espressos and crepes (with fruit and cream) for breakfast. Picked strawberries and raspberries when we were in Lynden last week and we're having those along with some other fruit on the crepes. A favorite Sunday breakfast.

Our daughter enjoyed the backpacking so much she bought a backpack. She'll leave it here but use it when she's over. We have all the other gear for her except shoes (which she bought before she came) and a good sleeping bag. We're trying to find some good places around Spokane and in Idaho for hiking and backpacking, but it's a whole new world and we quite often end up just going back to the Cascades.

We saw so much during our trip that it's going to take me forever to get the photos ready. I've only made it through the Washington photos so far (actually not those taken in the gorge). I'm sure you are in the same fix, but who really cares. It'll happen when it happens. Figure I can work on photos when I'm too old and decrepit to hike anymore. Almost there but not quite.

Guess I'd better to and do breakfast.

Such a close-up photo of this dragonfly looks alien and quite threatening at first, Janet. Sometimes they are so obliging and stay nice and still, not like butterflies which lull one into a false sense of security and then suddenly flit away at the last moment.

What a superb macro of this dragonfly - amazing detail which are normally unseen by us, unless we too have an incredible macro lens like yours and also those who are lucky enough to espy one, especially one that stays still for any length of time.

It seems to have become a lucky thing that your RV had to be repaired so it meant you staying at LL Stub Stewart State Park for a longer time, because this meant you were able to explore more places and see wonderful things.

Wow, Janet, what an exquisite macro of this beautiful snapdragon; that blue color is just stunning! So glad to see you back again, my "pod sister" friend! Hope you are enjoying your travels! :-))

Earlier this past week we had a gathering of mayflies mating! I had never seen so many in my life! We have had a lot of wet weather over an extended period of time, so ponds and drainage pools were at a high; that is all I could imagine that would cause this vast population! I took photos of the phenomenon and will post them soon!
