Pictures for Pam, Day 207: Curled Fronds in a Double Dedication with Marie-claire Gallet

Pictures for Pam, Day 207: Curled Fronds in a Double Dedication with Marie-claire Gallet

(+2 insets) (view large for the best detail!)

It was so pretty this morning with the sun shining brightly and so lovely to be outside as the world was waking up around me. Well, ok--to be honest, when I begin my walk at an early time like today it's 7:30am and the sunrise ship has already sailed away two hours before! But I'm sorry, 5:30am is officially "0-dark-hundred" and that is no time for a sane person to be getting up! At least, not in my mind, anyway! Heh...I'd consider myself a "morning person" now but that only goes so far!

Steve and I have been so busy working on the property and prepping for our trip that I've had to neglect my pictures from our last trip. However, today things were much more relaxed so I took the opportunity to get some images finished from our lovely visit to Stout Grove, in Jedediah Smith State Park.

This lovely park is nestled in a huge forest of old-growth redwood trees. These magnificent trees include the largest and tallest trees in the world! They only live along a narrow strip in northern California to southern Oregon and are quite the magnificent sight. (I'll be sharing pictures of the redwoods in another post) :)

The forest here was also brimming with fern species and I went totally hog-wild with my photography the moment we got out of the car. You may know that I'm a hopeless junkie for ferns, especially when the fronds are unfurling...they are so unbelievably cool to me. :)

And so, today's presentation is all about some of the lovely ferns I photographed! The main picture is a close-up of an unfurling Sword Fern and the insets show two other pictures of this super cool species, including their "elephantine" unfurling fronds and a fun shallow dof art shot! I hope you enjoy the show!

Pam, I can't remember if I've asked you whether or not ferns grow on your property or not. You don't have any in your photo stream but I'm going to bet you do have at least one? We have a few here which I've found at the edge of our larger seasonal stream and on the hillside, but that's it. It's too dry and honestly, it was a huge surprise to discover these in the first place! What survivors they are to deal with this arid place.

By the way, I just LOVED that you are both a Nimoy fan AND you use the LLAP gesture!! Silken thread indeed! *BIG HUGS* Here's hoping you had a better than average day my dear! :)

Explored on 6/5/19; highest placement, #4.

Ich würde dein Bild gern meiner Gruppe ' Meine persönlichen Favoriten / My personal Favorites ' beifügen.

These are magnificent, Janet. I cannot pass a patch of uncurling ferns without getting photos and they are all different, so what can one do except, as you say, go hog-wild? I think I like best the photo with the out-of-focus fern in the background. Exquisite!

Jedediah Smith is one of our favorite places and the fact these photos were taken there makes them even more special (if something can be more special). Can't wait to go there, if we go, that is. Protecting the property as best we can from fire is more important.

Speaking of fire, thank Steve for the information on the air-purifying system. I've sent him a question in reply and trust you will pass it one to him. Sounds like what we need to deal with sore throats and sleeplessness from smoke.

We are also getting smoke from wildfires in Canada. The season has started there too and our family in Edmonton had at least one day that seemed like twilight due to the smoke. Will pass the information on the equipment on to them as well.

Concert tonight. Eastern Washington U's symphonic band has their summer concert in the park and we will probably go (if the smoke isn't too bad). We'll take supper along. Enjoyed the concert last year and this should be good, though I haven't seen the program.

Thanks again for all the help.

It was a great idea to take this with flash. It makes it so incredible sharp. I also love the black background. The second PIP looks like a dragon's tail!.

Janet, your main image is just magical..............the flash has made the shiny surfaces really stand out and the hairs on the stem seem to made of sparkling gold. The detail is amazing and I really love the symmetry.

Two wonderful PiPs as well. Both are a master-class in using razor-thin depth of field! I particularly like the "elephant" trunk! Brilliant.

OMG Janet - it looks as if the fronds are covered in gold with golden tinsel decorating the stems. Amazing photos. I have quite a few ferns in my garden, but I've never really studied them much. I'm going to have to have a good look at them when I go back home, that is if I can get down the garden - I find it very hard going trying to keep the balance as it's a steep slope in places.
