Upper Klamath Lake, Rocky Pt. Resort

Pictures for Pam, Day 170: Sunrise at the Rocky Point Resort Dock

Pictures for Pam, Day 170: Sunrise at the Rocky Point Resort Dock

(+1 inset)

Today I spent several happy hours taking pictures of and processing images for Monday's Macro Monday. In fact, I got so carried away that I totally forgot about my post today! Thankfully I have my next pictures all ready to go from our trip to Upper Klamath Lake!

What a special occasion. How many times have you made yourself get up to see the sunrise? I bet there's a whole lot of you who are like me--that number is extremely low, maybe 5 times? I do get up earlier now and sometimes it turns out to be before sunrise but that's not the same thing. What I mean is…you're asleep. You either wake up because of an alarm that you set just for a sunrise or the light wakes you up…you're so tired and groggy and you don't HAVE to get up. It's entirely up to you. When I'm not forced, the result is usually rolling over and going back to sleep! What about you?

I'm really happy that I won my epic internal battle to get out of bed so I could be part of the sunrise. I think part of my success lies in the fact that I'm old enough to know how it feels to really regret a bad decision. And I would have been very unhappy if I'd gone back to sleep. There really is something to be said of some sagely wisdom as the years tick by.

I posted my silhouetted tree picture but I have other before-sunrise pictures that turned out well so I have two more to share today.

The main picture is the left side of the dock with the glowing horizon and cool soft colors everywhere. I even managed to capture a duck in the water, huzzah! My inset is a look down the right side of the dock with the moon above along with a wispy jet trail. (By the way, I'll be posting sunrise images on the day after tomorrow, since tomorrow will be my Macro Monday pictures!)

I'm really delighted with how well this new Sony is working out. Our ipernity friend, Roland (ROL/Photo), who was my inspiration to get this firecracker of a camera, gave me a tip about lowering the exposure by a stop in bright situations and it's really helped a lot. I've been able to adjust my images in my Camera RAW application and the dynamic range is super. Even though it wouldn't seem necessary in before-dawn images, the difference between light and dark is quite extreme and it's been wonderful to get better results with my pictures! YAY!

Pam, I did a search for "sunrise" and found this beautiful sunrise image you got while in flight to Atlanta Wow, is that lovely. There's something really neat about capturing sunset/rises while flying. I'm glad you got such a nice picture, mine haven' been so successful! Hey, I hope you had a nice day today, you've been in my thoughts! *hugs*

If you don´t have to go to work, getting up (though always a struggle) isn´t too bad, because you know you can lie down again later on. Or am I wrong?
Anyway, this photo and the PIP was worth it.. the boat(s) make it special.

These are both lovely sunrise images, Janet. At this rate, you'll shame me into climbing out pre-dawn with a camera. :-). Thanks for looking up my earlier image of my little Renault image, that's also it in the Pip with my latest photo.

Oh wow Janet - this is absolutely gorgeous. I have actually be known to get up early to photo a sunrise while on holiday in Greece. It was gorgeous. I have done one here in the UK but I need to be upstairs to take it because it's to the left of my house and you need to sort of hang out the window!!!! As I don't get upstairs very much nowadays, certainly not while it's dark!, so sunrises here are a no-no!!

Well worth the effort of dragging yourself out of bed Janet..................this is just wonderful..!! I love the colours, both in the sky and on the surface of the wonderfully still water. Your composition is excellent too, and viewed large you can see the amount of detail you've captured in the shadowed areas.

The PiP is stunning................I love the blue tones in the sky and on the water and also the pink hues above and below the horizon. The light on the dock is absolutely gorgeous and has really brought out the lovely soft colours of the canoes.

WoW to both..!!

Both very striking photos, Janet. I actually like the inset the best with the colors of the boats and the portrait format. Stunning! I probably would have found a spot where the kayaks were not in the photo, but I think you've shown that including them is the better option here. Gorgeous sunrise and gorgeous photos.

The tip about turning off the stabliizer is one I've heard before but just didn't think about when I was photographing the lighthouse. Actually have a different lens that I use for night photography but forgot it at home - alas. My brother called as I was getting ready to leave and his car wouldn't start and I hurried too much.

The lens I usually use is a Tokina 11-16 f2.8 and I really like it, but, as I said, I forgot it. Tempted to take my wife out there and do some sunset night photography with it but the weather reports are for rain most of the week. We'll see. We wanted to visited some nature preserves as well but that's more likely in the rain.

Wish sometimes I lived along the Lake Michigan shore (did as a boy). It offers some outstanding opportunities for photography all year around. But, then, there are no mountains in Michigan and I can't imagine living without mountains. Just have to take the opportunities we have when we're here, I guess.

Added a couple of new birds to my list last week, a Pied-billed Grebe and a Blackpoll Warbler. Got some decent photos of the Warbler but not of the Grebe. Also saw Cardinals which we never see out west and lots of Mute Swans. Didn't realize that they'd naturalized so well in the east.

Went to a Tapas restaurant Saturday night and had some of the best restaurant food I've had in a very long time. We don't go out very often because we like what we cook at home better, but this was superb. And, speaking of food, have to cook for the gang some time this week. Probably Indian or Thai.

Took my parents on a long drive Wednesday to Traverse City and the Lelanau Peninsula. Hoped to see the cherry trees in blossom but we were way too early. They don't get around very well any more and were content to sit in the car most of the time. Didn't get much opportunity for photos, though.

Feeling very sedentary. Staying with family and seeing them interferes with my usual exercise - walking - routine and I eat too much. Eager to get home again and do some hiking around home and in the mountains. Have some orchid spots I want to visit as well since we missed most of them the last two years.

I was blessed with dawn after dawn of the most spectacular sunrises and I made a very determined effort to get up in time!!! That meant 5:45 in Midsummer in Spain, so not so bad really.
Yours is a truly beautiful image!

your picture is the answer...it was worth the getting up early...
I could for my part say with Colette the French author : " J'aimais tant l'aube déjà que ma mère me l'accordait en récompense...".
I'm a speial early riser to see that ever changing and new play which is dawn...
and your picture is especially beautiful and serene...not a word, not a move, just silence...
great !

What a beautiful place! The rising sun enchants sky and lake with pastel colors. The parade of canoes in the inset looks great. The first rays of sunlight let glow the colors of the canoes. It was worth getting up early to see the sunrise.
