Pictures for Pam, Day 117: Snow Flakes

Pictures for Pam, Day 117: Snow Flakes
(+2 insets!)

Today I woke up to more rain and dreary weather but I didn't care! Steve and I are so excited about our new RV that no amount of cold and rain can ruin our moods. :)

Pumpkin and I hopped into the shower where we whistled and sang to each other as she watched me from her perch. When we got out, I held her up to my face--touching my lips to her beak--closed my eyes and whistled softly to her. She whistled right back and I could feel tiny puffs of her warm sweet breath as she sang to me. My heart threatens to burst with the love I feel for that darling, amazing little girl. How lucky we are to have her in our lives!

As I've been commenting on pictures over the past week, I keep running into images of Pam's favorite flower, Snow Drops! Every time I see them, I am reminded of our trip down to San Anselmo back at the beginning of the year. While I was wandering around Nathalie's property I noticed a small, white, spike of flowers that was growing low to the ground. The second I got close enough I recognized them! SNOW DROPS! I'd never seen these in person before so you can imagine how excited I was. However, there was something not quite right about that flower...it didn't look exactly like the Snow Drops I'd seen before. I would need to investigate.

I'd planned to process the pretty little white flower image right away. However, you know how things go sometimes. I got distracted by other pictures and time passed. Today though, I was bound and determined...and huzzah, it's now my picture of the day!!

Before posting, I wanted to make sure this flower was named correctly...and after comparing mine to a Snow Drop, I could see that it definitely wasn't one. Diminutive, white, green spots, but this little flower is a Snow FLAKE, not a Snow DROP. I found a nice page that showed and explained the difference.

I am also including two more pictures from San Anselmo as insets. One of them shows some pretty Alyssum flowers that were growing on Nathalie's back patio (Do you see the little ant visitor?!). The other one was from our first hike and shows the remnants of a kind of wild grass called "Rattlesnake Grass." The seed casings on this grass actually SOUND like a rattlesnake if you shake the stems of several of them!

Well Pam, I’m still hoping to find a real Snow Drop for you but I hope that this Snow Flake will make you happy too! I looked on your page for a picture of one of yours and found this little beauty to appreciate. They are so lovely. I hope that you are having a good day! Many hugs from southern Oregon!

Wow, Janet, I have learned something today, thank you.
I thought your flowers looked unusual with the tiny green spots. I thought to myself...I have never seen snowdrops like that before. And now I know......Snowflakes :-)) Beautiful.

Absolutely stunning little flowers..............and you've captured these perfectly Janet. The background especially is just sublime!

The PiP of the Alyssum is really beautiful, especially the out-of-focus background!

The PiP of the Rattlesnake Grass is just WOW! Spot on focus and depth of field. Such delicate beauty..!!

Gorgeous photos, Janet, and thanks for the information about Snowdrops and Snowflakes. I never realized there was difference, though they are in fact very different. Hard to choose a winner from the three, but I think the Snowflakes are my choice.

The snowshoe trek was amazing. Both of us mentioned the quiet - there wasn't a sound and the beauty of the mountains in winter is overwhelming. We were quite tired when we got back down, though, and were happy to sit with an espresso for a while.

Yesterday was strange - started out warm and sunny and end cold and snowing. We have an inch or so on the ground now, rather a disappointment after the spring-like weather we had when we first arrived this side of the mountains.

We found a few Grass Widows that were blooming and some Spring Gold, both among the earliest wildflowers to bloom, but they were just starting. Also found some Mahonia in bloom but no Fairy Slippers. They're a month away from blooming, I'd guess.

We did see and photograph a Red-tailed Hawk and a small flock of Snow Geese near Lynden, but when we looked for the geese in the Skagit Valley where they winter in huge flocks we couldn't find them. Alas.

Spring is very late here, as on our side of the mountains. I would think that we are at least three to four weeks late, which may mean we miss the Fairy Slippers. We have to travel to Michigan in April for a wedding (I'd rather see the Fairy Slippers).

All the best with the new RV. I'm nearly as excited as you guys are.

Oh thanks Janet for showing me this gorgeous little flower that I've never seen or probably not noticed, that I might have mistaken for a snowdrop with extra bits of green. A snow flake - never heard of them - they are really cute.

As for the white flowers - great picture - very similar to a bush I have here, but yet different (if you know what I mean!) I've not heard of a Rattlesnake Grass neither - there again you do have different flowers over the pond!!

I'm so pleased for you and Steve being so excited about the new addition to the family which is going to take you both to wonderful places and we here are going to be blessed with seeing your amazing photos.

Three lovely images Janet, and you have educated me - I didn't realise there were flowers called snowflakes, - thought these were snowdrops. Perfectly delicate and beautiful and I am sure Pam will love them as much as I do.

A lovely main image, Janet. Although someone else may have already said, I think this is actually a Spring Snowflake (Leucojum vernum).

It's very much the snowdrop season here Janet. Well it's nearly over now but they are such pretty little flowers and look so beautiful in your picture. I also like the PiP's very much. It has been quite windy here over the past few days but the daffodils are hanging in there....unlike my front porch mat that has disappeared....probably in a neighbour's garden!!
