H is for Huge Hawk Moth (Hyles Lineata)
A couple of weeks ago I opened the door to let the dogs out for their morning business and saw something on the door out of the corner of my eye. Turning to look, I nearly fell over! This moth is about 2" long, what a monster! I was really excited because I instantly recognized it as a Hawk Moth, sometimes called a Hummingbird Moth because it can hover in midair like a hummingbird and is also a nectar feeder. Moths in this group also have the longest proboscis (tongues) in the world (Morgan's Sphinx Moth holds the record at 1 foot long). It was so wonderful to get a nice picture of this beauty!

Note: My apologies for being so slow to put up new pictures, I've been working on my book!

If you would like read more about these moths, Wiki has a page here: Wiki: White-Lined Hawk Moth For more informations on this fascinating family of moths, visit this Wiki page: Wiki: Hawk Moths

Explored on ipernity on April 7, 2014. Highest placement, #2.

I had one of these in my bedroom once and it was a bit of a shock, not expecting something that big to be fluttering around my bedside light. Still I did manage to take a quick picture of it, I'll have to dig it out.

This is an amazing picture and you have captured it in all its glory. Well done

What a beauty. You've captured some really fantastic detail in the moth. I saw my first hummingbird hawkmoth last year, and even maged to get a few shots of it, but not while it was sitting anywhere and not that good. I've got a couple of pics on flickr in an album of butterflies and insects. If you want to see them they are at

Excellent capture! Sadly, I have a deep fear of moths and would have screamed and run away. Chris would have had to take it away outside.

Blimey, I had to scroll down for half an hour to post this comment.............

What a brilliant find Janet! Such a beautiful creature, and it seems to have come to your to have it's portrait taken, rather than you having to go out hunting for it - how convenient. Do your advertise? lol..........

Anyway, your macro skills have not diminished at all, the detail you've captured is just amazing and the moth looks great on the black background. I love the symmetry of it's plumage (is that what you call it?) and the intricate patterns on it's wings! Cracking work :)

A Beautiful insect. We have several Hawk Moths the best known being the Privet Hawk Moth as its Lava feed on Privet and Lilac, the grubs being bright green with white and mauve side stripes they also have a horn on the tail which looks like, but is not a stinging needle.

On Okinawa I saw many of their "Humming bird moths" they are huge and make a lot of noise in flight.
