CHARLIE'S TRAIL

CHARLIE'S TRAIL
One of my favourite places for a morning walk with a quiet creek slowly trickling alongside is Charlie's Trail at Hatley Park, a National Historic Site in Victoria BC Canada. This park has a history dating back to1906, when B.C.'s Lieutenant Governor, James Dunsmuir, who was of Scottish descent, purchased the property. He and his wife Laura commissioned the renowned Canadian architect Samuel Maclure to build a 40-room mansion in the Scottish baronial style; the Tudor revival style was popular in the Edwardian period. The property later was sold to the federal government and became a military college in 1948 and was named Royal Roads Military College. Today it is the site for Royal Roads University. Charlie's Trail is one of many miles of trails on this 600 acre property. There is still first growth trees, some over 500 years old, of Douglas fir and Western red cedar growing in this park.
