A small town in the middle of the Mojave, originally at the junction of the Santa Fe and L.A. & Salt Lake (now Union Pacific) railroads. The railroads still exist, but they're now paralleled by Interstates 40 and 15, respectively, and the highway traffic is a much larger part of the economy at this point. There are also a couple of military reservations (Ft. Irwin, and the Marine base at Yermo) in the vicinity. The town has recently embarked on a facelifting, including lots of historical murals (seen here) on downtown buildings. It's also on historic Route 66, which is another tourist draw.
