I like it that someone has taken a bit of care with the calligraphy; simple, un-ornate and the style of the sign seems appropriate.

The signs are nice and distinctive, but alas vulnerable to both weathering and vandalism. New historical trail markers are usually made of a chunk of railroad rail welded to the top of another piece as a post, with the interpretive sign on engraved steel riveted to the rail. Here's an example:

I take your point. Aesthetics vs ruggedness! Both are fine pics. I prefer the former but agree it is often better to go with the latter!
