Mound House Mine

Mound House Mine
Outside (yes!) Mound House, Nevada. Altho it's not far from the Comstock, it's mining an industrial mineral--gypsum--not gold or silver. Telephoto view--the powerlines were unfortunately placed!

This is the Mound House gypsum mine, which is (yes) outside Mound House, Nevada. It's not far from Gold Hill--I've put it on the map.

Ok, thought it might be the gold mine there by Virginia City. Maybe that's the Comstock project that in one of your other photos? We loved it up there. Will move if we get the opportunity.

Yeah, I have a few pix of the brand new Comstock project in the Gold HIll collection. We like the summers up here better than southern Nevada--but there _is_ a winter! ;)

Thanks! One of the few commodity mines that Chinese competition hasn't yet put out of business...

I find it interesting that the mine is in a hillside, the largest gypsum mine here is in a dry lake.

Gypsum is often an evaporite mineral (i.e., precipitated by evaporation), so lake beds are not an uncommon occurrence! Here, tho, the gypsum seems to be associated with volcanic activity, according to a quick skim of the relevant section of Nevada Bureau of Mines & Geology Bull. 75, "Geology and mineral deposits of Lyon, Douglas, and Ormsby Counties, Nevada."
