Walker Lake

Walker Lake
Mineral County, Nevada, USA. Looking north. The sump of the Walker River; which rises in the Sierra Nevada and flows east, its level is set by the balance between river inflow and evaporation. The shorelines on the opposite side below the highway show how much the lake has dropped since the arrival of Euro-Americans, due to irrigation diversions upstream. The very highest shorelines, however, above the highway are from pluvial Lake Lahontan and are much older. The highway is US 95.

Yeah, anywhere there's too many people chasing too little water-- This is not the only closed-basin lake in the arid western US with this problem, either. Pyramid Lake, Nevada, and Mono Lake, California, to name two, are in similar straits. In both those cases (and here, as well) legal action has hopefully prevented further withdrawals.
