Mt. Rainier (under cloud to right) and Little Tahoma Peak
Telephoto view from the Crystal Mountain ski area, looking west. Little Tahoma Peak is a satellite summit that is an erosional relic of a larger volcanic edifice. It's apparently very dangerous to climb because the rock is so broken up.

Thanks, Ann & George! As I've commented elsewhere, it's hard to realize this is one of the most dangerous volcanoes on the planet--

Mt. Rainier wearing a hat:-) I hope it doesn't erupt for a long time or if it does that it gives enough warning before it blows its top!

Thanks! It will undoubtedly give lots of warning before it erupts--the problem is that it will still be devastating, not least because lots of people will (if history's any guide) ignore the warnings! And, of course, subduction-derived stratovolcanoes like this are lots more explosive than basaltic eruptions like those in Iceland or Hawaii.

I can imagine that some people are stupid enough to ignore closures and warnings. They won't stand any chance... At least for sensible people there will hopefully be enough time, not like Ontake.

In Europe Vesuvius or Campi Flegrei would be an absolute disaster, the authorities are not prepared at all and probably will never be.
