Photo taken at Friar's Crag, Derwentwater, Lake District, England, 1936.
My mother was here on a school trip from London although she is not in this picture.
I only knew John Ruskin by name, and found out a lot more about him with the help of an extensive Wikipedia entry.
Apparently Ruskin was an important and influential Victorian art critic and author - but if you read to the end - also a creepy pedophile.

Happily, I'm sure these young girls are oblivious to that, and enjoying their day hike. My mother has such happy memories of this rare holiday out of London.

It is so interesting to me that someone of his occupation would merit a monument and so extensive a Wiki biography. I can't conceive an art critic/art historian/author to have such an impact today. I suppose it is a reflection of what captured the attention of the British upper class at the zenith of the empire. Sweet photo.
