Euphrosyne Parepa Rosa by Stereoscopic (1)
Euphrosyne Parepa-Rosa (1836-1874); British soprano.
In 1852, at the age of 16, she made her debut at The Royal Opera House of Malta as Amina in Bellini’s “La Sonnambula”. In the years 1853/57 there were engagements in Naples, Genoa, Rome, Florence, Madrid and Lisbon. In 1857 she made her London debut at the Lyceum Theatre and between 1859 and 1865 she appeared in London at both Covent Garden and Her Majesty's Theatre. In 1863/68 she also made extended tours in the USA with the Maretzek Opera Company. In 1863 she had married Army Captain H. de Wolfe Carvell, who died in 1865, sixteen months after their wedding. In 1867 she remarried the German conductor and violinist Carl Rosa (1842-1889). Together they established in 1869 the Parepa-Rosa English Opera Company. In 1869/72 they made several tours in the eastern and midwestern states of America with this new company. In 1872 they returned to Britain where in 1873 the name was changed into Carl Rosa's English Opera. Euphrosyne Parepa-Rosa died in childbirth in London at the age of 37; Carl Rosa endowed the Parepa-Rosa Scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music in her memory.
