Fidès Devriès by Reutlinger (1)
Fidès Devriès (1851-1941); American (-Dutch) soprano. She was the daughter of the Dutch soprano Rosa de Vries-Van Os (1828-1889) and a sister of soprano Jeanne Devriès (1850-1924) and the baritones Hermann Devriès(1858-1949) and Maurice Devriès (1854-1919). She and her sister Jeanne were pupils of the famous tenor Gilbert Duprez. She made her debut in 1869 at the Théâtre-Lyrique in Halevy's "Le val d'Andorre". This was followed by an engagement at the Théâtre de la Monnaie at Brussels and in 1871 she debuted at the Grand Opéra Paris as Marguerite in Gounod's "Faust". Here she remained until 1874 and in those years she also made guest appearances at the Opera House of Lyon. After her marriage in 1874 she interrupted her career for a number of years. In 1883 she returned to the Grand Opéra and she made guest appearances at Monte Carlo, Madrid, Lisbon and the Netherlands. She also appeared at the Théâtre-Italien in Paris. In 1885 she created the role of Chimène in the première of Massenet's opera "Le Cid" at the Grand Opera Paris, together with such famous singers as Jean and Edouard de Reszke and Pol Plançon. In 1887 she performed at the Théâtre Eden the role of Elsa at the Paris premiere of Wagner's "Lohengrin" with Ernest van Dyck as her partner. In 1889 she retired from the stage as Gilda in Verdi 's "Rigoletto" (at Monte Carlo).
