Stakeout

Stakeout
Sorry to my fb contacts who saw this info already. Included on this page are some additional photos I took with my camera while on stakeout waiting for Fuggles to come along.

I caught Fugglesworth and her litter mates when she was a kitten about 7 weeks old in 2010. She was the last litter of Mama before I finally TNR her. So Fuggles is the half sister of my own Marcie and Jenna (Mama's first litter) and also she is half sister to Petra and Shadow (the litter just before Fuggles). She is almost identical to Shadow, just a bit smaller than he is. Fuggles was adopted along with her sister Simi while they were still very small kittens.

Three years ago Fuggles got outside and she roamed loose for about 2 months before I accidentally trapped her while working on a different TNR project. I returned her to her owner, and she went back to being a normal house cat. This year, once again Fuggles got out (some time ago) Again she has been roaming loose. Her owner has not even seen her since she got outside and one of the neighbours who feeds some outdoor cats and strays had only seen her once. It seemed rather hopeless for me to find her. Though I captured and tamed her as a tiny kitten, she goes back into feral cat mode very easily.

However, about a week ago I started my efforts to try to find/trap Fuggles again. During the first few days I saw nothing. Then one evening I caught a glimpse of her. I wasn't sure, because it was dark and the cat was very quick to exit the scene. A few days later I saw her again, and this time I was sure. Over the last three of days I have seen her every night. Unfortunately she either did not see or she ignored my trap. The one day the wind was all wrong so I'm sure she didn't even notice it that time.

Last night I tried a new bait and I put out two traps - one at each end of the alley. This new "miracle bait" was quite successful in drawing cats. I had cats coming from all around the neighbourhood, including Fuggles. Fuggles she was very suspicious of me in my car so she retreated from the end of the alley I was at with one of the traps but she quickly found the other trap and she circled it and circled it. She hung around it for a couple of hours, leaving for a few minutes here and there. It was dark so I could only see a shadow of her shape. Close to 1 am I had to give up but I will be going back and trying again. I hope to try my drop trap on her, but that will require me being close to the trap so I can trigger it. I don't know if she will tolerate that but I do hope that her love for chicken will somehow help me catch her.

2. Two orange cats from the neighbours. Both were very interested in my trap. The one beside the trap has almost no ears and I trapped him earlier this week once already. I am sure I could have gotten him again if I let him go in the trap. I chose to sit beside this trap so I could frighten the neighbour's cats away without causing too big a scene and disrupting the entire neighbourhood.

3. Rasputin also came through - I was rather surprised to see him and was trying to figure out if I could hold him for the weekend if I trapped him. He showed zero interest in my traps though and he sprayed a few locations and kept on going. He was very thin and does not look healthy.

He does usually come around my place from time to time and he is still on my long term wish list to trap...

Oh, Fran, you work so hard for the cats. What will you do if you trap Fuggles? Will she go back to her owner again? Sorry to hear Rasputin isn't doing so well.

Hopefully you will be able to catch Rasputin at some point when it's
not so busy at your house.

You've been really ambitious here. I'm sorry Rasputin looks very thin. Maybe Fuggles needs to be an outdoor cat with it's owner, maybe when you get it, they can put chicken outside for her and then maybe she'll stay around outside and then they can go to putting normal cat food. Some cats hate being indoor cats.
