Laverockbank, Newhaven

Laverockbank, Newhaven
View of the block at Laverockbank Avenue from the top of the steps in the bank. The balconies are angled to maximise light, privacy and the sea view.

Laverockbank is a municipal housing development in Newhaven designed by Basil Spence and partners for the City of Edinburgh Council (1957-1960). The partner in charge was Peter Scott Ferguson and the job architect was Richard Ross Forbes Cassidy. The engineering work was by Harley Haddow. The design was given a Saltire Society award in 1959.

The site is a steep and challenging one running down the steep bank toward the Firth of Forth. This block in Laverockbank Avenue is in keeping with the pre-existing tenement housing. A linked block in Laverockbank Crescent is in scale with the villa-style housing of the area. The whole scheme provided 27 homes and one shop. A pend in Laverockbank Avenue gives access to a rear car parking area with lock-up garages.
