Scottish Widows: St Andrew Square

Scottish Widows: St Andrew Square
Numbers 9 to 10 St Andrew Square in Edinburgh’s New Town as seen from St Andrew Square gardens on a sunny April day. The ground floor is occupied by a very handy small Sainsbury's supermarket. To the left is the famous Jenners department store (now alas just like any other House of Fraser).

Offices for Scottish Widows life assurance by Basil Spence, Glover & Ferguson (1962). ‘Pale Derby marble on a shiny black base’ according to the Edinburgh volume of the buildings of Scotland; the base of polished black granite matches the neighbouring building on this part of the square. Features inset entrance and set-back penthouse.

“Although wishing to remain in its original location in the heart of the city’s financial district, the company was keen to shed its Victorian image.”
