By 'food' do you mean fish - that is, are humans now eating the food the birds used to eat? Or did we merely destroy the habitat that produced their food, say, by polluting it?

Both!
People are now catching and eating fish that a few years ago weren't deemed edible!
Stripping out the smaller stuff (sand eels etc.) for various commerical uses destroyed large sections of the marine food chain!
'We' are trying to do something about the pollution- ever so slowly- and far too little too late, but still trying to strip the sea clean of life!
Who ever thought the Grand Banks would and/or could have be fished to destructuion...
