Barn Swallow

Barn Swallow
(Hirundo rustica)
This was one of a pair zooming in and out of the barn the other day (miserable grey day it was!).
The old barn gets checked out by them every year, but so far they have not decided to nest in it.
Black Birds used to nest in there every year. The cats left them alone too.

I'll say this - they are VERY protective of their nests! We used to have a boathouse up at our cabin and since it was right by the shore, there was ALWAYS an active nest every spring / summer. It sure gets one's attention when an annoyed swallow zips past within a couple inches of one's face!
