W.F. Hermans was one of the best Dutch writers of recent history. His polemic work still stands out. He never forgot his enemies.
He died April 27, 1995.

The Parool newspaper was "his" newspaper, he wrote columns for this paper for years.

Recent history in old newspapers: Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn murdered
The murder of Fortuyn was the first political murder in the Netherlands since 1672 (if you don't count Anton Mussert and his henchmen who were executed after World War II for collaborating with the Germans). He was murdered by Volkert van der Graaf, a left-wing nature lover. Dutch politics hasn't recovered yet.

Recent history in old newspapers: Filmmaker Theo van Gogh murdered
Theo van Gogh was murdered by a religious fanatic. Tensions between the religious and the liberal tendencies in Dutch society has been high since then.
In the television series "Smiley's People", Alec Guinness as George Smiley says: "They can't win, because they are fanatics!".
