Oh yes, and to add insult to injury my old wagon belched out thick black oily smoke if it was heavily laden on a steep hill.

I would imagine I was about as popular as a f*rt in a space suit ;¬)

The old diesel engines did that. I remember being enveloped in clouds of smoke if I was behind a city bus on my bike. My old Mercedes could also smoke when driving at or near full load. The maximum amount of diesel is injected, but it cannot be burnt completely and that creates the black smoke.

In the Rocky Mountains you could see those big American rigs crawling up the mountains.

In fairness my old Guy artic would take you up the steepest gradient in the Scottish highlands once your dropped down to 'crawler' i.e first gear, but would blot out the world behind better than a WW2 destroyers smoke screen.
