Mandolin Rain

Mandolin Rain
The story behind this image: A couple of days ago, I heard one of my favorite Bruce Hornsby songs on the radio; I immediately got an idea use the song as my muse for this week's image, using white balance to accent the mood I wanted. I have a mandolin that I used to play (not so well) many years ago at family functions, made by CF Martin & Company. They are world renown for their guitars, but they also make very nice mandolins. My particular instrument is the "A" style model, not the typical "scroll" style that you see more commonly in bluegrass bands.

I must say that I really like the idea of using white balance to achieve a particular atmosphere!

*For the Sight and Sound Group:

"Mandolin Rain" by Bruce Hornsby

"Listen to the mandolin rain
Listen to the music on the lake
Listen to my heart break every time she runs away"

I like the natural toned picture most :) Are you playing for yourself?
Valfal has replied to Yvonné Lizzy Bruní (…
Thank you so much Lizzy! Unfortunately, I don't play anymore because I could not learn past playing simple chords. I could not get my fingers to do what I wanted, no matter how hard I tried. It doesn't help that I was already an adult when I first learned.

It sounds familiar to me :) I can play guitar a little, but I'm also not that good in that, unfortunately... Anyway, your instrument is also a good photo subject ;-)

Stunning stunning stunning! Val, I had the same problems as you but additionally I could see no difference with the shots. I have sorted but not quite mastered. This is truly spectacular! I love the image you ended up with. What a triumph !

Valfal has replied to Janano -
Wow, Jan, thanks so much! Lots of trial and error on my part, that's for sure! That being said, I can say with sincerity that this week's challenge made me aware of another "tool" I can use to create an entirely different look to an image. :-)

This is a lovely photo Val - I haven't tried with the different effects using white balance as a medium. I'll have to try this out for atmospheric pictures

Valfal has replied to Jenny McIntyre
Thanks so much, Jenny! Yes, you should try experimenting with the white balance sometime, it can be another good "tool in the tool belt"! :-)

Great Bruce Hornsby tune. This turned out beautifully Val and is such a nice addition to TSC and Sight and Sound. Great job!

Mandolins are so pretty. I don't think I've ever seen this type before.

oOo PART TWO OF THE MANDOLIN STORY oOo
Valfal has replied to beverleyplaya
Thanks so much, Bev! I like both versions of my photo for different reasons, I understand why some people like one over the other and vice versa; it all depends on the mood you are looking for. :-)

You have two very beautiful mandolins! The one on the top half of your photo looks like an "A" style, like mine, the one below it looks like the classic Eurpoean style. Do you play them sometimes?
beverleyplaya has replied to Valfal
no, sadly I do not play ... but there is a story and briefly ;-)
my Father was in the Royal Navy during the war ... the day he was due
to set sail ... him and his friend went to board the ship ... he had spent
the weekend with his friend and family and his friend "Peter" played
the mandolin ... he had two (the two you see here) .. Peter played the
very old one and he had taught my Father how to play .... they were
about to set sail ... my Father was called back to leave the ship ...
Peter stayed and sailed away ... the ship was hit by a torpedo,
the ship sank .... my Father visited the family to break the news
to them ... they gave him both mandolins to keep ... he played often
(with a tear in his eye) ... they now belong to me . . . ;-)

Valfal has replied to beverleyplaya
Wow, how special those mandolins are! Thank you so much for sharing the poignant history behind these precious instruments, Bev! xxx
