Friday evening on Jebel Totil, Kassala, Sudan
The cafes on Jebel Totil were a favourite spot for visiting honeymooners, and with locals on Friday evenings. It was one of the few places in the city where men and women could meet...until the police decided it was too immoral and broke up the fun. In 2004, they introduced a gate with an entrance fee, and new "mixing grounds" had to be found.

The cafes here serve the best coffee in all Sudan...thick, strong and black, flavoured with ginger, and served in a decorated clay pot called a jebbana, with popcorn, incense and "Cow Toffees" from over the mountains in Eritrea.
