Common Swift / Gierzwaluw / Martinet noir (Apus apus)

Common Swift / Gierzwaluw / Martinet noir (Apus apus)
As I was looking at my Swallow shots I suddenly saw this one. A Common Swift! I hadn't seen that when I shot it. I'm very pleased with this because not only is it a first, it is also a lifer! So although it isn't the best of shots in terms of IQ (a fairly big crop), I'm sharing anyway. :)

Look: no feet!!!

Catherine Wilson, papydiesel, Jose Luis Sánchez Nielfa, Don Sutherland and 6 other people have particularly liked this photo

Oh Wow, I spent some time trying to get one of these and never managed anything as good as this

Oh yes, they are very difficult. Flying bullets with erratic flight patterns. I've been trying to get decent shots of them since last year but it's still hit and miss. So I'm pleased with these results. Thank you very much, Gary!

A bird when it is first seen and positively identified by a birder. To qualify as a lifer, birds must be observed in the wild and under appropriate conditions to be added to a life list.

Gierzwaluw? Does this name pertain to it's big mouth?
Great shot!

Levina de Ruijter has replied to Sonja
No it doesn't. People used to think they were Swallows because they look and act so much like real Swallows and so they were named accordingly. Now everyone knows differently but the old name is still in use. Thank you.

Forgot to mention that "gier" refers to the noise these birds make when flying about.

Thank you so much, Artex! Yes, the bird looks and flies and acts like a Swallow, but it is not related to a Swallow. I only saw if was a Swift later at home, when I saw the image on the big computer screen! :)

Excellent shot
Really has to be exciting to not only find a lifer bird but come away with an excellent shot.

Seeing a lifer is great indeed, Colin. And although this is a bit of a crop, I am pleased with the shot. Thank you so much!!
