Sunset over Mary's Peak

Sunset over Mary's Peak
Theme of the Day: Patience

It took a great deal of patience to figure out how to apply two gradient filters to this shot. One for darkening the sky, another for brightening the foreground. The online tutorials were missing a very basic but important step in opening up the slider panel.

Hey! Great job!! I really love the light here, nice job with the gradients! Love the fence lines, they really pull my eye along! :)

I don't know if you've ever tried Topaz Lab's filters but they give 30 day trials and I absolutely LOVE their filters. Lens Effects has all kind of gradient filters like you were using, fun and easy to use. I don't use Lightroom but I am thinking about trying it out as I know it's quite powerful and nice to use. Anyway, Topaz is here: www.topazlabs.com

BTW, nice to meet another Oregonian! :) I'm not all that close, but 3.5 hrs isn't that far, is it?! :) How do you like Corvallis? It gets bloody hot down here in the summer months but the winters give us only a dust of snow, which is very nice. (if you reply to this, please drop it in a comment on my latest picture so I see it! :D)

Your hard work has paid off, conveys perfectly the mood of that time of day.
I love shots of rural America.
Have you thought about not using filters and achieving the same effect through software,
i.e graduated filters in Lightroom. two different tools to get the same result.

Thank you for your reply and compliments! Actually, this is done with Lightroom gradient filters...I didn't make that very clear in my description. I used one to darken the sky and another to lighten the foreground. I've never used lens ND filters...I am curious how different the two effects would be...do you have experience with this?
